What happens when we become short of oxygen and overloaded with CO2?  First of all, our lactic acid builds rapidly.  After that, it doesn’t matter because all you can think of is how badly everything in your body is burning.  Moral of the story, when your breathing because shortened, it makes all of your movements harder to do.  What can you do?  Control your breathing is the first step.  But what happens when you get to the point to where that option is out and the CO2 is out of control?  You learn to become comfortable being uncomfortable.  There are a lot of people that hate that feeling and will do anything they can to stay away from it.  However, if you want to be able to push hard and possibly compete, practice continual movement while short of breath.
